‘Paedomorphosis’ and ‘juvenility’ in secondary xylem: (not such) useful constructs?

چکیده

Summary In 1962 Carlquist published “A Theory of Paedomorphosis in Dicotyledonous Woods” based on his observations that some species non-tree growth forms such as stem succulents, lianas, woody herbs, and tree rosettes exhibit, their secondary xylem, cellular characteristics more commonly associated with primary xylem. He considered the appearance these characters an expression protracted juvenility, they reflected paedomorphosis. Since then, many others have observed similar suites traits across multiple plant lineages, also characterize insular woodiness, used ‘paedomorphic’ ‘juvenile’ to describe traits. this essay, it is argued use term paedomorphosis should be restricted cases where ancestor/descendant relationships are known or a comparative sense among closely related taxa, retain its significance descriptor evolutionary pattern. Second, growth, therefore not because characteristic only young, pre-reproductive phases but instead persists for life plant. Because both concepts juvenility possess less well-accepted modern meanings differ important ways from Carlquist’s terms, different approach suggested focuses functional suit traits, addition characteristics.

Secondary cell wall deposition in developing secondary xylem of poplar.

Although poplar is widely used for genomic and biotechnological manipulations of wood, the cellular basis of wood development in poplar has not been accurately documented at an ultrastructural level. Developing secondary xylem cells from hybrid poplar (Populus deltoides x P. trichocarpa), which were actively making secondary cell walls, were preserved with high pressure freezing/freeze substitu...

Not such a flutter

For many conservationists, butterflies are some of the key species that can indicate the quality of an environment not only for themselves but for many other, often less visible, species. Some of their specific needs are often well known, but movements around their habitat and important factors within it are less understood. To help address this issue, a new study reports for the first time the...

Juvenility and maturation in conifers: current concepts.

Maturation in conifers includes several distinct and persistent changes in the growth habits of apical meristems. Despite many studies on maturation in conifers, there are still many aspects of the process that have not been elucidated. For example, it is not known why maturation of cotyledon-derived tissue culture plantlets is rapid, whereas the natural maturation process is gradual. Also, it ...

Strigolactone-mediated Stimulation of Secondary Xylem Proliferation in Stems.

Secondary xylem (wood) accounts for a large proportion of the terrestrial biomass. Understanding how secondary xylem develops and proliferates is a challenge to enhance our capacities for biomass production. Recent reports revealed that the plant hormone strigolactone is key for the development of secondary xylem. Here, I describe a protocol for strigolactone-mediated stimulation of secondary x...
